tough long day

Pos: here
Loc: before Tacarigua de la Laguna
Acc: tent
Dist: 48,7 km
Start: 5:40 End: 16:50

I was up early and packing in the moonlight in the eerie forest. But no one came, neither from the sea nor from the river mouth, what I was thinking. Only tons of little crabs making noise, and breaking branches fortunately not hitting my tent. It was hot like a sauna with no breeze, and I dared to sleep naked just covered with a silky cloth, on top of my fleece blanket. This felt reasonable comfortable, always having the silk on the skin.

The weather today was as mixed up as it can be and did not keep to any forecast. It was dark sky and lightning in the morning, but no rain came. Still the accompanying fresh wind wore me down going around the rocky bumpy headland. Once I had the big city in sight, the sky was still black, and the wind was breezing up to 20 knots  preventing a direct crossing of the bay. I eventually may have cut the last corner, and it opened up and calmed down a bit. Still annoying. Then along the beach the wind became a friendly following ssw, not too bad after the slog around the rock and bay crossing. At the end of the day it was simply dead calm.

I could have either stopped early to find a remote camp spot before the long beach with houses and people, or to keep on going hoping to find a seclude spot after the populated section. I opted for the latter, as it would have been too early to stop, I was eventually paddling reasonably fast, otherwise I’d have been sitting in the heat for useless hours. But now I almost paddled until darkness, and really could have called it a day already earlier. But first the fancy beach, with apartment houses, then the more simple versions, endlessly long. But eventually I left it all behind and slipped through a low white surf line unnoticed out of sight with my white kayak to the beach and camp away from the sandy front in the grass.

And yes, there ARE many mosquitoes and ants! After I landed already with neo socks, long pants and almost my bug net on, the first time I tried to shower/ clean myself inside after throwing the gear in and myself after, frantically killing first all bugs which also made their way inside. It is a fricking sauna! And all with only marginally clean skin, I hate it. But I am used to fully living inside now, washing, cooking, eating, drinking, peeing and pooping, no bug is allowed to bite my precious backside! I have “only” two bites from my sick day on my backside, and they hurt like hell  sitting in the boat…it’s such fun paddling in the tropics! 🙁

Throughout the world native peoples have learnt how to adapt to living in their environment. The choice is always to learn from them, or to use modern technology to avoid having to adapt. At times Nature seems to have a sense of humour, and the technology fails us. When it does, you’ll have to rely on “native solutions”. There’ll be more challenges in the tropics before you’re finished with your second continent. Make the most of your tent while you can.

Nice Karen. I enjoy reading Freyas postings because I can so relate to so much of it. Enjoying the being out on the private beaches but having to do nearly all of it inside for those blasted pesky bugs. Safe paddling Freya.

Thank you for sharing the realities of your life. We all have struggles that we are challenged with. I hear the elders say that we are living in a playground. How we deal with the challenges determines the result.
Your doing great!
