A sick rest day

Pos: here
Loc: Awala/ Yalimapo or Les Hattes
Acc: tent

Rain all night made it easy to stay here this morning. It seems like the next beaches are all rather sandy without mud so I don’t have to arrive around high tide and can start and stop in daylight and the tidal shift the next days doesn’t really bother me. So it seems…we’ll see.

I felt not great, but not too bad either. Still my chest and throat is sore and I am coughing and sneezing. This is a good time and place for a rest day. The forecast may even demand two days off, we’ll see. It could be a worse place to stay! Enough water, and an occasional chat with locals who are not too intensely strolling around my tent at all.

I discovered on a short beach walk at low tide many many empty turtle eggs, looking like white ping pong balls with the air let out. They were on top of the beach and rolling in the waterline, not sure how long a small turtle needs to get out of the laid eggs? No live turtle to be seen though, yesterday at dusk it was raining with many bugs and not at all inviting to be on the look out for them.

It was a windy, but only half rainy day. Four kite surfers about a kilometer up the beach were enjoying the wind probably more than I would have done. Not sure if they were young local natives or tourists.

I took my time to work again on the connection of my cockpit rim to the hull, my beach repair didn’t hold up. Fortunately the bugs were at bay in the wind! This time I used real epoxy resin soaked with stripes of fibre glass, hope it cures hard and holds now. It is a tricky area to access inside and outside, but it is important to be strong on the daily handling. Each time I caught a small wave from the left side I felt the water running down my left upper leg, and I had to sponge the cockpit out frequently. No good state. Hope it is strong now and not leaking any more!

But my sick body got even a bit exhausted by this “effort”, and I went back to an afternoon’s nap inside my tent. The wind is down now, not too bad, but I will stay another day to cure me out fully. For what it’s worth…

Glad to read are you getting the kayak repaired and dry in the inside again. Now take care of you. Rest well and I hope you’re feeling much better soon.

Glad you’re giving yourself another day, Freya. Plus you needed to do the more permanent repair to your kayak anyway. Rest well to regain your health and strength.

I’ve been paddling on the Potomac in Washington, DC but today it has frozen over so must paddle vicariously through you. I hope you get to feeling well and travel safely.
