Day 275, Monday, 19.10.2009

I was tempted to haul over the sandy spit which connected Hammerhead Head with the mainland, but checking it out and doing it may have taken as long as just to paddle around it.

I was heading in a straight line offshore, passing the Twin Peak Islands close on my right. There was even one of the rare tiny sandy beaches on the granite islands of this southern archipelago on North Twin Peak Island! But I had no reason to land, and kept on paddling.

Conditions were nicely pushing, and I was aiming to round Cape Arid, and to land in a small Bay where the Poison Creek ends, and Greg had easy road access. A solid 70 km day.

Cape Arid had a beautiful inviting calm white anchoring bay on the western side already, sheltered by reefs and islands, but it was not time yet to call it a day and to camp!

The gap between Arid Island and Cape Arid was a little bumpy, but nothing serious compared to other headlands. I talked to Greg on the radio I would be landing at 4,5 pm, and he took up position in the sheltered bay with the video camera. I was supposed to land, and to talk a few words into the camera…not my favorite task, but I played the game.

The campsite was a short walk through magnificent native bush with beautiful wild flower bushes on a national park campsite facility, with a new roof, picnic table and rainwater tank! Nobody has been there for weeks!

I got a convenient hot shower, could rinse my gear and enjoyed the dinner Greg was cooking. Life was not too bad after a long paddling day! I wouldn’t have minded a short walk to the creek or along the beach to see a bit more of the beautiful native bush, but for such additional luxuries the time of the evening was too short…

(Chris here, back from Spain and updating blog) Text message from Freya via satellite phone:

33.55 123.19, Poison Creek. 70 km, 5:00 am to 4:30 pm. Nice pushing day. I felt guilty about taking yesterday off—wind was down afternoon— but I got most office work done.
