Day 14, Saturday 31.01.2009

The lycra rash-guard I was wearing the last two weaks was giving me a nice salt water rash…

I need to try some different paddling top…Peter Provis gave me one of his thermals, and I hope the next days my skin will look better…the rash was there already the first days, but developed pretty badly after the last tough two days. This may be my personal challenge on this trip, keeping my skin healthy. No sunburn problems, but this rash looks like a teenager in puberty…I got tea tree oil from Peter, and some PawPaw ointment from Phil…we’ll see what my skin will like. probably just simply less hours on the water…

Peter, Phil and the Abalones…

Anyway, Peter Provis was hosting me that day, thanks!!! A fresh water shower was just what my skin needed again. I had a nice dinner with him and his buddy Phil, who introduced me to eating Abalone mussels he was catching by himself yesterday.

Peter did as well like Mick McRobb in Lakes Entrance before some checks on my boat, good to have handymen along the road! :-)) Being a carpenter, he was building his spacious luxurious house in a forest just by himself, great job!

Agai, the day was filled with cleaning and repairing gear, shopping, e-mailing, pictures editing and blogging, besides cutting some hours off to be a bit social to you nice hosts…not easy on this “work” trip! I apologize for all people hosting me wherever along the way for me being busy with chores rather than being social all day…that’s the way it is. But I DO appreciate a lovely homestay every now and then!

Hi, Freya, I am an herbalist. See if you can get ahold of some Neem oil. It has great antibiotic and antifungal properties, without being a petroleum distillate. Bill was right when he mentioned that tee tree can also be an irritant.
You are amazing!!!

Gooday Freya—-I am one of the greybeards of the VSKC and a good mate of Peter Provis, Mick Mc Robb and Dave Winkworth

I have done a lot of long distance paddling–Bass Strait and the full Murray River solo. Also have done the Murray Marathon for the past 20 years.

Skin care is in my opinion crucial to the success of a trip and you should have seen Andrew McAuleys back only after 5 days on his Gulf crossing–He was on antibiotics for weeks after

I was concerned to see the photo of your skin, so thought I would pass on some of the knowledge that I have picked up over the decades which seems to work (I should mention that I have been a practising veterinarian for the past 45 years and skin conditions are one of the most common things I see)

1 Wash in fresh water with mild soap whenever it is possible
2 Apply methylated spirit to any affected area—it dries and removes moisture
3 Use either Medi Creme or Savlon ointment as soon as a spot develops—Take care with Tea Tree ointment, as some times it can be an irritant

Medi Creme is possibly the best–The main ingredient is Chlorhexidine which is used throughout the world as an antiseptic. It has a great ointment base and also contains a small amount of local anaesthetic. It is a medical preparation freely available in pharmacies throughot the country

I will be in contact with Dave Winkworth and will see if he can get you some when you catch up with him at Tathra

Congratulations on what you are doing—You must be a very special person
