Paddling on liquid mud…

Same game this morning…this time I made all 10 km wheeling along the beach in one rush in the morning – getting fitter in the sore arse and thights muscles! 🙂

Eventually I waswheeling out – and waiting again for the tide to come! It was blowing like hell offshore, and the eventually incoming low tidal breakers where like spray with the wind against them. Amazingly not a single fish jumping nor bumping this day…maybe the very strong offshore wind kept them way out?

Luckily it was eventually about 2 or three degerees only, but the seemingly perpendicular offshore wind was pushing most of the times! I could cut my remaining paddling distance to the Wallal Downs campsite down to even 30 km, until I coveniently pulled into shore, wheeled a bit and put up camp. No need and rush feeling to paddle into the night to make the remaining 30 km in darkness on a high tide landing…

Text message from Freya via satellite phone:

19.38 120.55 80-Mile Beach. 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.  10km wheeling 30km paddling. Thank goodness the “spooky” part is over with “liquid mud” water disappearing behind the horizon

RE: Bruce comment

The definition of “portage” is “the carrying of boats, goods, etc., overland from one navigable water to another”. This move on the beach does not really qualify for a portage. I beleive it is just launching further down the beach unsupported and fully loaded. Doing this alone and in soft sand for a mile or two can not be an easy trek.
