Today was the crossing of the wide bay towards Poissonnier Point, quite an uneventful paddle on flat water.
I had to stay out quite wide, as the water before the Inlet was very shallow, and high tide was still 3 hrs away!
I was tempted to pull into shore already at the last beautiful stretch of sand before the shore was fringed with a belt of about 10 km of mangroves, but as I wanted to be in Port Hedland next day, I had to make it at least to the entrance of the Breaker Inlet. I knew from Google Earth there were sandy beaches in the Inlet mouth, but I didn’t trust myself for the last 3,5 km at 5.30, close to last light, and pulled into shore in a sandy gap between the mangroves towards the good beach behind the mangrove belt.
I had a bit of wheeling to do over sandy sea ground about two hours before a low high tide, but it was not too bad. Next morning’s high tide would be higher, and I would get out better. Thank goodness to my wheels…
