Day 204, Sunday, 09.08.2009

It was a calm, quiet Millpond paddling day way offshore along sandy beaches and dunes only. Boring? Yes…if there wouldn’t have been the whales spouting and jumping, and some big fish frequently jumping as well. Pure, simpe nature, and I was stopping quite frequently to simply watch and listen.

Eventually I was in cell phone range, and opened my “water office” reading all and writing short e-mails, and doing some phone calls. Keeps you entertained…

Eventually I was 5 km away from Carnarvaon, and gave Gary and John from the rescue team a call I was approaching. They were to come out with the boat to escort me in through quite a shallow channel system into a very hidden harbour. Thanks for that!

No problem for my kayak, but I reckon the bigger boats have to keep the clear entry line not to get stuck in the sand. No crocs any more in those mangroves!

The Carnarvon main harbour was quite big, and I was impressed by the huge fleet of similar green fishing boats, about 25-30 of them, nicely lined up on the full moon’s break!

My gear and boat got safely stored in the rescue team’s shed, and Jill and Gary Hornhardt took me home for a shower, bed and feed.

Text message from Freya via satellite phone:

24.52 113.39, Carnarvon. 55km, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. I was escorted in by John and Gary (Cartner) on the rescue boat, and hosted by Jill and Gary (Hornhardt), president of the rescue team. Thanks!
