Day 297, Tuesday, 10.11.2009

Today was for sure a rest day. I woke early, but didn’t feel like getting up anytime soon….

Later, we liked to drive out to the Nullabor roadhouse for a real shower and to top up some fuel. There was nothing else really exciting at that dusty roadhouse to make us stay longer, and we tried to find another more easy access to the Head of the Bight beach via a track prior to the whale watching station, for a possible start over again tomorrow.

We found it, and just turned in later on the nicely paved access track to the station, way behind the locked access gate. Nothing locked here…

Being curious about the fancy architecture buildings, we stopped and pressed our noses on the window panes, but soon jumped into the car again. This place was full of millions of tiny little black biting ants! Inside and outside the buildings, they simply took over in the 7 months the station was closed out of the whale season. I reckon they’d have to get a professional bug hunter with liters of poison spray to get going again…

We drove further towards the dunes of the Head of the Bight, probably where everybody used to drive for watching whales for free before they put up that fancy expensive station. charging quite some entrance fees…

This end of the cliffs was nice to drive on top, first a rock track, then lose rocks on top of firm sand. We found a sheltered spot, set up camp and had lunch. We had quite good mobile phone/ internet reception, and I was able to do some work. Thank goodness for the generator we carried in the van…I was uploading on the blog some already written previous days, editing the latest pictures and called Chris Cunningham in Seattle for an interview for the next Sea Kayaker Magazine issue.

The only thing ugly in that idyllic spot in the dunes were the flies again, that nasty we mostly sat inside the van where they could be kept at bay a bit better. It was quite a warm day

We checked the forecast, and were pleased to read some ok weather would probably coming up the next days. Usually no to low northerlies in the morning, and low to moderate headwinds in the afternoon. We had to learn that the northerlies would be baking hot, and the cooler southerly sea breeze came up sometimes earlier and stronger than I liked…but it could be worse!

Report from Chris Cunningham:

There was no satellite phone text message from Freya today, but I spoke to her by Skype/cellphone for an interview for the next issue of Sea Kayaker. She and Greg were car camping by the beach and in good spirits. They’re both relieved to have the last of the cliffs astern.
