Day 299, Thursday, 12.11.2009

The weather pattern seemed to be the same the next days, some hot offshore northerlies in the morning, and cooler onshore southerlies the afternoon.

It was just a bit less hot and a bit less windy today, and the onshore sea breeze came away at 12.30 already.

The surf looked quite manageable once I turned around the corner at Cape Adieu, but I was not planning to land on any open beach anyway, but in the sheltered Fowlers Bay.

I cut across some bays up to Point Fowler, all of them had a more or less sheltered spot to land, I reckoned. I saw Greg parked on top of Scott Point, asking if I was still ok paddling around Point Fowler. Yes, no problem, still enough daylight and energy left…

It was a bit choppy around the Point, actually quite entertaining for a while and not threatening at all. In the first beach around the Point there was a seal colony, but I didn’t paddle close up as I felt they liked some privacy, too…On the next beach in the sheltered side of the headland, there was a single big fat, probably male, sea lion sunning himself on the sand.

I quite enjoyed the change of conditions paddling around that long jutting headland, from open surfy water to choppy renouncing stuff to a calm and peaceful paddle, making me mentally ready for the hot shower at the local campsite.

I must admit despite the amenities at an official campsite Greg and I felt much better camping in the wilderness without noisy neighbors…but the ice cream at night made everything up!

Text message from Freya via satellite phone:

31.59 132.26, Fowlers Bay. 75 km, 7:00 am to 7:00 p.m. Less windy, less hot, less surf today, and back to civilization! Greg drove through agriculture first time…hooked up on campsite.

Hi Freya, congrats on completing the cliffs of The Bight. That’s an outstanding achievement in a sea kayak. Enjoy the more relaxed & less threatening coastline ahead of you. You are a star kayaker.

Cheers, Graeme.
