Day 300, Friday, 13.11.2009

Greg was using the epic plane – I had simply to paddle…no photoshop!

It was Friday 13th – and I had an open water paddle across Fowlers Bay to Port le Hunte or Point Bell – nothing really challenging or exciting. It was dead calm in the morning, and I was gliding along with good speed. As usual, the afternoon sea breeze came away with 10-15 kn today, still quite all right as the water in Fowler’s Bay was flat without any swell going.

I stayed wide offshore in a direct line, passing the tiny Sinclair Island and aiming eventually for Point Bell where Greg found beach access on a sandy track through a narrow belt of dunes. The headland had some reefs, but it was low swell enough to make them breaking only wide to my right, leaving a gap to slide through safely.

Greg already today visited Ceduna town to pick up a parcel during post office opening hours, but had to drop our box with fruits and veggies somewhere along the road, to pick it up later again. The fruit fly control station before Ceduna wouldn’t have let him in with that stuff! They had a similar control station on going east to west at Eucla, which Greg passed once back and forth in the same way on reconnoitering a landing for the start of the cliffs ahead.

He was already able to buy a few new supplies for that night’s dinner, and it was quite a feast with a tender lamb steak, fresh corn on the cob, salad greens, kiwis, avocados and fresh juicy oranges after getting quite short of yummy stuff along the Nullabor Plain. The last food shop was in Esperance! In between we had to live on what we were able to keep fresh plus the dried stuff, stocked up with few expensive more or less fresh fruit and veggies from the roadhouse take away kitchens. Some woody carrots, potatoes, apples and dry oranges, a dozen eggs. Nothing really to water your mouth on the long run!

We were planning a short 25 km paddle tomorrow to James Point only, and to food shop together in the afternoon at Ceduna. I was really looking forward to that!!! Both, a shorter paddling day and new delicious food…

Duane beat me to it. I’m proudly giving myself a pat on the back after a 22 km crossing and you Freya are regularly cranking out 75 km days. What a tremendous effort. Best of luck on the remainder of your journey. God Bless!

Duane

And here I am bragging about a 24km trip. This is an amazing effort. The mental strength you are displaying is out of this world.
