Day 4, Wednesday 21.01.2009

Beautiful pile of rocks – South East Point, topped by a lighthouse

First day with light winds all day, even almost some following! 65 km for the day, 10,5 hrs only…I cut across to the most southerly point of mainland Australia, already Tasmania in sight – well, at least some islands belonging to Tassie. Rounding Wilson’s Promotory  was beautiful scenery allover, I would have loved to pull in here and there to have a closer look.

But Refuge Cove was the destination for the night – a hiker’s campsite with fresh water and an anchoring site for boaters was supposed to be there. having that lovely New Zealand couple in mind hosting me for a whole day on their sailing yacht two nights, I had some hope to run into similar nice people…

Pulling around the corner, I viewed five sailing- and motoryachts in there. I paddled up to ask for the fresh water source to the one motoryacht where there seems to be some life on deck – too much life for me, as the well-meant invitation for coming on deck at 8am and share some beer and tell a story was simply too much for my tired body.

I pulled ashore, checked on the hiker’s campsite and found even a luxurious fresh water tap. A quick body rinse and filling up my water bags did the job. But I preferred to camp right on the beach besides my baby, in sight of the yachts at sunset. I’m sure the ranger would have kicked me off that campsite if he would have seen me there and not on the “official” campsite, but luckily no one showed up until I was gone next morning.
