SPECIAL BULLETIN

A note from Greg Barton of Epic Kayaks:

We’re looking for somebody who can transport a kayak from Perth to Broome for Freya. Ideally, they’d deliver the new boat, spend a day with Freya assuring the boat is working to her satisfaction and then take her old boat back to Perth.

Pass this on if you know of anybody who can help us out!

Please email me at greg@epickayaks.com

Best regards,
Greg Barton

Oooh, yeah, Kerry I like you too, girl…As for Freya and the kayak delivery, I would be so there for the awesome opportunity, but I live in California – in the mountains. So I hope some progress is being made on this front. Edda?
Paddle on Freya!!!

Kerry Parslow

Thanks, Edda (there’s only one of me, fortunately.)

I’m glad Greg from Epic was able to provide more backstory on the “replacement” kayak, especially that it was the one she would have had in the first place if not for the international complications with the molds (I hope that squelches the gripers). We Freya Fans will all be happier when we know your sister has a more solid boat and can spend her daily shore times resting and enjoying the scenery instead of patching.

Ah, yes, I know about hubby snatching the duvet. Mine used to do that too so I got a bigger duvet. Then I would still wake up cold and find him rolled up in the whole thing like an Egyptian mummy. I finally solved the problem by keeping the duvet and getting rid of the hubby! Now I sleep nice and warm plus the duvet doesn’t snore(besides, hubby hated camping and kayaking, so he wasn’t worth keeping!)

I’ve decided a kayak is better than a husband (or boyfriend) because:
– a kayak will always take you wherever you want to go
– it always responds when you snap your hips
– you can leave it in your basement or garage and it won’t make a big mess
– when you get tired of it you can trade it for a fancier one
– you control the “stick”
– if it has too much to “drink” you can pump it out quickly
– you can own more than one without breaking the law or being called a tart

To put Freyas Kayak into perspective.. she has been paddling a EPIC 18x Sport performance model production boat (off the shelf) ..with some slight modifications…the plan has always been to exchange her kayak at some stage in the journey with a new EPIC 18x Expedition Kayak..specifically designed and modified for long haul voyages. Recent scraps with some coral reefs have damaged the Kayak so the timing is right.

I don’t understand what the issue is of Freya deciding to get a replacement kayak for the rest of her journey.

With myself having lived in my kayak for more than six months at any one time, I can speak with some authority on this. Gear fails on long expeditions. The ocean environment is so unforgiving to your kayaking gear.

Let’s look at it in a slightly different view. If you were to spend your 4 weeks annual leave kayaking, it would take you 6 years to do what Freya has done in six months, so to have a hole, or a problem with your kayak, you would be thinking that’s not bad for 6 years of use.

I personally don’t know, but I’m assuming Freya’s kayak is made of a Kevlar composite which is much harder to repair than a fiberglass kayak out in the middle of nowhere. Let’s wait till Freya can reply with what the problem is with the kayak. Maybe the manufacturer can put some light on the situation. Not many manufacturers get an opportunity have so much R&D put into their product.

At the moment, Freya’s kayak is her whole world, and I truly mean that, so it is important that it’s in a-one condition. Once Freya reaches the southern tip of Western Australia, she is going to encounter big seas at some point. So if she carried on in an un-seaworthy kayak and then needed rescuing, how many of us would be jumping up and down then.

Safety is the number one issue here. We don’t need to lose another sea kayaker following his or her dreams. I applaud you Freya on this occasion for putting safety first.

I hope this helps to put this issue to rest.

Edda

Yo, Kerry, love you already! A girl with commons sense!! Both of you if there are two? I got my gripe off my chest on Day 146 (again).
Unsupported means no ground crew following on land. Not churlishly refusing help freely offered. It be bed manners for starters. And who has taken less days off work since Freya started than her. Not me, that’s certain. I’ve had a nice lie in most weekends, and I sleep in a comfy bed each night, unless my hubby snatches the duvet, lol,
I’m all for constructive criticism and exchanging ideas, but nitpicking is not useful.
Go Freya GO!!!

Freya keep up the spirit! I have a deep respect for what you are doing. following you every day. Even if it takes 5 boats to do this job it is still something that has my deepest respect. you will succeed!

Kerry Parslow

Amen, John.
If an adventurer was attempting to walk around the world and the soles of their shoes wore through, I doubt anyone would object to them getting a new pair — same thing here with Freya replacing her damaged boat.
It still amazes me how anyone could take issue with this at all. But criticism is cheap and gives some people their jollies, I suppose.

I hope we hear soon that she’s got the new boat safely under her. Hurrah for Epic for supporting her (and they should hang onto that first kayak — even with the hole it’s a collector’s item now!)

John

Freya is doing an amazing job out and around the coast of Australia, the mental strength displayed by her in the crossing of gulf is inspiring and can teach paddlers a lot about the adventure and journey of the mind and spirit involved by embracing seemingly impossible challenges. So what if a boat needs exchanging? It makes sound maritime safety sense and smacks of a very practical and considered decision from an extremely experienced mariner as Freya.

Mark, Mirage airfreighted a new 530 from Sydney to Melbourne for me for $100, if that is helpful. It arrived very well packaged. Not sure if all manufacturers offer to do this.

Kerry

Mark,
Maybe this is too obvious a question, but have you looked a folding kayaks? Freya herself started out with one (check out her bio). I own two myself, both Feathercrafts, a Kahuna and a K-1, which have performed for me beautifully in a range of waters, including the Atlantic. A bit pricey to start (though used boats can be had) but transport is a snap — I can carry either boat in a duffel bag, in a car trunk or plane, even ship it by regular post in a carton. Seavivor makes a stunning high-performance folder too. Other vendors are Nautiraid and the venerable Klepper.

Not to detract at all from all the fine “hard shell” boats, but folders do reflect the original “skin on frame” design the Arctic peoples devised for ocean-going watercraft centuries ago and are remarkably versatile.

The forums on paddling.net share many user insights on gear and technique throughout the world.

Everyone’s opinion is valued so long as it is kept moderate. This is a public blog and so I assume hearty discussion is encouraged. As the title says it is a race against time, mind and body and so certain compromises are required. But this still does not diminish the overall accomplishment she has already achieved or put a lid on what is to come. Also for those making assumptions about other’s abilities or achievements, I am sure that there are many people contributing to the blog who have themselves made significant achievements on and off sea-kayaks and it is this reason why opinions are so highly valued. Just out of interest, I am wondering if there is an online discussion group in Australia for sea kayak related items? I belong to VSKC but they don’t have a real time blog that I know of. I am interested to know how people might go (in terms of cost and logistics) taking a sea kayak on a plane? In terms of freight cost it might be ok as they are so light. I am in the market for one and are considering flying to pick it up if it is humanly possible. Of course I could paddle it back but that is currently beyond my skill levels. Happy paddling all…

Gayle

Don’t recall a post where Freya is blaming her boat for anything. (Did I miss something?) She is still making progress. I think the challenge is to paddle around Australia, not paddle a specific kayak around Australia, and I reckon she’s doing a pretty good job of just that – paddling around Australia. Wonder if she passed Bruce along the way and dented his ego.

Kerry

Hey, Bruce:
“Only a foolish workman would keep working with a damaged tool when a sound one is at hand.”

And, regarding such snooty comments as you made, we Yanks have some other sayings:
“If you can’t say something nice, say nothing at all”

and (should that not work for you)….

“Bite me.”

rosie

you are doing what a lot of only dream of and do not have the opportunity or courage to do . be positive and you shall be right pray that God will keep you and take courage from the positive notes send to you. the negatives are only jealousy in motion

greg

Freya
it takes a person of rare courage, foresight and strength of will to even contemplate such a challenge, let alone do it. You are doing an amazing job with a strength of mind that us mere mortals find incomporable. Please continue to feed off all the help and good wishes that you have received from Australia and other parts of the world and leave behind those thoughts that try and diminish your feats . Kick arse girl from the Gove surf club

Kerry said “I wasn’t aware there was some sort of “Marquise of Queensbury” type set of rules engraved in stone for circumnavigations…Like if she doesn’t abjure all aid and suffer from dehydration and dealing with a punctured boat, that her effort “doesn’t count”?”

Touche!! Well said Kerry!
And if I didnt have a business to run and be located inconveniently on the other side of the Australian continent, I’d gladly put Freyas replacement kayak on my roof racks and be thrilled to play a small part in getting her safely and successfully back to Melbourne.
You are right in saying the graciousness displayed spontaneously towards Freya from all kinds of people in all kinds of places in a myriad of small ways has not diminished her effort one iota…infact..its has made her journey all the more unique, enthralling and a testament not only to her steely grit, but to the latent goodwill that exists within the communites and individuals that Freya has met along the way.
I have absolutely no doubt the same goodwill will combine in an unforeseen way to solve the current problem, and your gracious donation Kerry is already a part of that solution.
So lets get on with it…find an answer and get that girl back on the water south of Broome with a kayak that is not driving her crazy…I can only imagine how many swear words in German that kayak has had to listen to lately!!!

alberto valenzuela rocha

From your colombian friend: “When you are down and troubled and you need some loving care, you just think of me and soon I will be there…” C. King Tapestry.

The damage of your kayak sounded suspicious… too many and frequent repairs, but such are adventures in the tropics. I am sure a helping hand will soon solve your tecnichal aids and soon you will be again at the helm of your solitude and adventure. But remember my last message… you are already a winner and sometimes the obscure turns of fate are out of control and real maturity, a basic quality of an adventurer is accepting life as it comes.

Best of luck

Joe Brown

Hi Freya,

Don’t let any of the negative comments upset you. The vast majority of us that are watching your progress every day are 200% behind you, so take all the help you need and can get and keep yourself safe.
There will always be people sitting in armchairs wanting to critiscise, that is their sad loss.
But be as carefull as you can, we want to see you later. We hope you get your new boat soon, don’t push on too far if the present boat is not seaworthy, you seem to be well up on schedule and even if you have to take a break it may be best, their is a long way yo go yet, so keep thinking of what is best in the long term.

Love and respect
Joe and Maggie (paddled with you to Ecrohous, Jersey Symposium)

Kerry Parslow

Chris, the boat she is using has a hole in it that she has had to patch repeatedly — why shouldn’t she have a replacement boat?

Gee, what is it with some of you guys? Griping about her getting little bits of logistical assistance along the way. I wasn’t aware there was some sort of “Marquise of Queensbury” type set of rules engraved in stone for circumnavigations. Is this like some kind of male obsession? Like if she doesn’t abjure all aid and suffer from dehydration and dealing with a punctured boat, that her effort “doesn’t count”?

What Freya is doing is remarkable, a feat diminished not in the slightest by the tiny bits of gracious assistance people have offered her — she is still navigating and paddling completely on her own at an astounding pace.

Pardon the over-used cliche, but this Yank middle-aged female kayaker says: “Freya, you GO, girl!” I’ve been following her every day, biting my nails and cheering her on. If I wasn’t umpteen-thousand miles away with the whole Pacific and 3000 miles of US dirt between me and the Croc Coast, me and my old Volvo wagon would haul that new Epic to her in a heartbeat, and pay anything for the privilege.

In fact, I’m posting a donation to the site right now to help cover transport for the new boat. And if it turns out you get a volunteer to deliver it, she’s welcome to use the money for a well-deserved hot meal and a pint of ale when she lays over in Broome!

René Ortiz

For me it would be a great honor to do that for Freya (the transportation of new kayak and spend a day with her), just that unfortunately that I live in another continent (America, México), just being able to meet her in person I will do anything; Freya goes forward!!!, you are a woman with great courage. my best wishes.
