YAK was so kind to provide me the one and only reasonable cold weather gloves I can think of for serious sea kayaking – their YAK Open Palm Mitts. Thank you!
I have been using the YAK Open Palm Mitts all my paddling life – now YAK jumped in as a gear sponsor for the South American circumnavigation.
The material has changed a bit compared to models of previous years – the bare neoprene outer layer is now nice and softly lined with fleece inside. It feels great, smooth and even warmer than before when it had the bare neoprene on the inside as well.
The mitts cover your hands nicely and protect them from wind, rain and sun, but the paddle shaft contact is still given with the open palm. And you can flip them back easily to have the fingers free for fiddling with gear. No other full glove, mitt or pogie can give you that freedon yet contact to the paddle and easy way to get your hands free for doing some fine tuning work.
