A nice relaxing day with locals at Puerto Cumarebo

Pos: here
Loc: Puerto Cumarebo
Acc: Nohelita’s house

My partner Peter wanted to be nice and called me at my usual wake up time at 5 am, not knowing I was still sleeping because I was up at 1 am to be able to work on some e-mails. The internet on my smart phone works only reasonable well after midnight, not all all in the evening, and sparse during the day. The net work is simply overused the other times. So no uploading pictures possible in this city stop, very sorry.

I got a visit from the local kayak racing champion who had organized my reception party yesterday, Richard Colina, joined by a group of young kayak students. Some of them had joined the Venezuelan youth games for kayaking and urged mit o sign their souvenir t-shirts. Two girls presented me even their medals they won at those games. Thanks! We checked on my kayak and on their stock of K1 racing kayaks in a pleasant looking new boat house right on the beach. Very interesting to see what they paddle here! For such occasions I’d wish I’d carry enough promo cards to present each kid one, but that’s not possible for my limited weight space, very sorry! It still looked like the young paddlers were highly motivated by my visit and I was glad to inspire them what is possible to do. Thanks to Richard to organize the meeting!

My host Nohelita was so nice to drive me to the local supermarket for again to buy only water and fresh fruit. I am still et with the food I brought from home and from Colombia. I am simply not eating much in the heat with low appetite, good against my overweight at the beginning at this new leg. I am slowly getting back to shape!

We were stopping also at the house of a local woman, Letitia, who was born in Suriname and was obviously the only person in town who speaks English. I’d have needed her at the reception party and radio/ TV “interview” yesterday! Letitia has spent her young days in Holland, and then moved to Venezuela, being a nurse and a teacher. She spoke a little through the car window with me, asked by Nohelita what I’d like to eat today for lunch and dinner, and promised to come to Nohelita’s house in the afternoon for a longer chat and a press interview. She was all afternoon really great help to make the conversation with my hosting family more pleasant. Thanks, Letitia!

All in all my stay for that day was another pleasant experience with my local family, their friends and local paddlers. Thanks to all of them looking so nicely after me!

It sounds more and more as though it will probably make sense when you get to the Guiria peninsular to come across to Trinidad and return to Venezuelan waters from our south coast. I’m not sure how much more will be available in terms of groceries closer to Caracas, but even if you stock up there, you’ll still have a long run in areas that will probably be like Cumarebo. We don’t have as much of a problem with the availability of groceries, a lot of which is imported. But the best person to advise would be David Bottome, who knows what to expect with whichever option you choose.
