Traditional kayaks lined up for drying on the quite modern surf beach

Pos: here
Loc: Punta Malabrigo
Acc: tent
Dist: 60 km
Start: 6:30 End: 16:50

Tomorrow:
Estimated landing: Punta Cherrepe
Estimated starting time: Right after sunrise
Estimated landing time: Well before sunset

We had a quiet night, besides some low music somewhere. Our neighbor’s dog was on watch once barking shortly, but all good.

Just the fat surf didn’t really look inviting to go out on the same spot again. Going in was somehow lucky, and I felt it was lower than it looked now. Surely the calm corner on the city beach this morning was bare of people, the only issue was it was probably minimum 500 m away…a lot if you have two heavy boats with five heavy gear bags to carry and drag along.

Still we opted to do this extra early morning exercise, but we may have stopped at 350 m or such and decided this has to do it. In fact it already looked way much better, still not 100% clean though…we packed, and dragged the loaded boats slowly down the quite steep and coarse sandy beach, which made sliding into the water at the right point way more easy. Peter was not fully ready yet, and I saw my chance and just went off. An easy slide in, quickly closing the deck and pulling out the rudder fin, then a hop over quite some foam of the first breaker, a quick paddle into somewhat a lull, then a BIG one piled up…I will make it just about over the crest! I was speeding up like hell, and banged down on the other side with a heavy crash. Just about…then the way was free! thank goodness…

Peter made it out later also with good luck dry and safe, and this was the calm Huanchaco landing…not always as expected!

The paddle was again on the same comfortable weather and sea pattern, low swell, calm seas, low following wind, clean green sandy seas, a long, endless beach. You could call it also very much boring…but rather this way than strong headwind or huge seas and swell.

The landing around Punta Malabrigo went right into the area of Peru’s longest point surf wave…a jet boat came to have a look on us, we later assumed this was a surfer’s lift…if you have been catching the long wave on the very shallow beach area here, you won’t like to swim all the way back…

A bunch of surfer guys were sitting in there, but the waves themselves were low and had not much power on this general low sea today. We were able to land through the sideways rolling low stuff on a nice sandy beach at the end of the rolling wave. A good choice!

We were just moving our tent once from our initial spot on the side to more in the middle of the beach where it was a slightly bit higher. But high tide will be on 7.45 pm, no problem to check. Still only a meter tidal difference!
