I felt sick with a strong cold and stayed in

Pos: here
Loc: Fronton del Fraile
Acc: tent

I felt it already last night starting – a continuously running nose, a head bursting with pressure, and I was sweating probably more than necessary in the shady tent site. I must have caught a cold in the air condition, good for the skin, bad for the nose. And with all those many people around me greeting by cheek kissing…it happens…so far my health was best, today not really.

This morning my nose was fully stuffed, my head the same and my body hurt all over like after a fever. But I think I had none this morning, like it is after some night’s sleep. Still I decided to stay in, felt too wrecked to tackle another paddling day. I continued sleeping until at 7.30 the sun broke through and my tent became too hot without shade. I covered it with my black blanket, but as long as sun and breeze came the same direction, it was tough to get a bearable temperature inside. I moved with my book to the other side of the beach where some cliffs provided some better shade and a small breeze, but to move all my tent and gear I had no energy.

I spent maybe two hours reading there, until my thirst moved me back to my hot tent, I had only to drink my hot fresh water, and I thought sweating is good to get the sickness out of the body. I knew like yesterday at latest 2 pm my tent would also have shade, and I could catch the strong afternoon breeze for bearable temperatures. A day at a Caribbean beach is a pleasure? Well…with an ice box and drinks, an umbrella and a windy comfortable bug free place to relax, feeling healthy and occasionally dipping into the water with a cool fresh water shower after wards. No people here though…good.

With the afternoon breeze, the sea whipped up to many white caps almost as yesterday, but unlike yesterday it was already moderate headwind all day. Nothing really missed…and tomorrow will be a tad bit lower wind, I guess. I should make it to the cape, without turning around, as after the cape the city of Higuerote starts which I like to avoid for a while until plain boring beach begins.

Freya, have you seen the water bottle fans that a few companies sell? I have one, and it’s a reasonably good answer to the problem of a too hot tent when you need to rest inside it. They are battery operated, and have just a little electric fan on top of a plastic water bottle…so you spray yourself with water and the fan cools the water. The only problem for you would be that sea water might block it up, and obviously, your fresh water is limited. The fan on a water-sprayed face or chest is a big relief though, when it’s really hot. Maybe someone knows where to pick one up in South America?
