trip days left: 56
straight distance left: 1180 km
Highlights: I got a bicycle escort!
Lowlights: Headwind…
Launch: Sheltered beach
Landing: Tiny surf
Pos: here
Loc: Garopaba
Acc: tent
Dist: 45,4 km
Start: 5:40 End: 16:40

The plane traffic almost over my head ended fortunately at midnight (I think…) and started at 5 am when I was awake anyway. It is really scary to sit in a tiny fabric shell and to have a few tons of metal flying quite close over you…and noisy! But nothing, really nothing compared to my experience with the Ariadne rocket start “just” 13 km away in French Guiana…

I had to put my bug net on this morning, those tiny sand flies were nasty! Unfortunately I forgot to close it properly, and my whole face felt like burning a swollen lump for two hours. Horrible.

I also liked to stop already after an hour, punching in a funneling 15+ knots headwind was not really pleasant. The same conditions when I really stopped yesterday. But yesterday I was tired after already 30 km, this morning I was well rested, and I kept on going, hoping for some shelter close to the island and the wind going down a slight bit. Both were there eventually, but it was still hard work.

Paddling close to land was at least pleasant to look at all the small villages. The whole southern bay is actually littered with plastic jugs holding shell breeding baskets. Oysters, I think. It looks quite funny! Strange you can’t see those on the satellite pictures. They must have erased them. The villages seem to be all busy with those shell breeding farms.

At Punta da Caicangucu I spotted a woman sitting on the rocks, obviously waiting for me! And yes, it was Monica! We had emailed previously about a hosting offer, but as I was already all set in Jurere, she at least took her chance to catch me today! We chatted a bit, and she then rode her bike all along the coast south, occasionally popping up waving here and there. Finally we said good buy in a tiny harbor at the southern point of the island, and I crossed over to the mainland. Nice meeting!

The crossing itself had some bumpy water, but not that strong current as you may expect in such a narrow opening. I checked at all my way points where to land best, but it was so early and I noticed I actually eventually had some good current with me, despite headwind! My slow average of 3,9 km/h raised suddenly to 5-6 km/ h! I decided to leave all the actually not great anyway landing spots away, and to head directly in about 10 knots only anymore headwind to Garopaba.

A small beach away from the main beach was my goal, but when I arrived camping didn’t really look great there…the option of a public looking grassy area above was occupied by a marriage party, but on the beach were just about two tiny sand “islands” which looked like to stay dry on high tide! One was occupied, one just got free…that was my site! A private island on a flooded beach on high tide…just when I was about to make camp, about a dozen plastic tourist kayaks entered the beach! Glad I didn’t speak Portuguese…and I was kept in privacy.

The wedding ceremony was just over, the group had entered the beach for pictures, now all are gone and I am by myself on a Saturday night. Good.

Two more days to paddle to Santa Marta, then I will probably have to have three days off due to big seas and wind!
