Th try of paddling into the next bay...stranded under an overhang

Pos: here
Loc: coast across Isla Sola
Acc: tent
Dist: 3,5 km
Start: 8:00 End: 9:00

Today it took 20 tries to start my computer, yesterday it came on at once…like women are sometimes…

I took one false start only today to paddle out – how the hell could I think I could paddle in the forecasted 20-30 kn headwinds? Although in the shelter of the bays and in flat water in those bays? I knew the forecast, and I really enjoyed after the day full of events yesterday to turn around again in my sleeping bag…but still I didn’t believe it was that  windy out there and I decided to go. *My* bay was sheltered, so may be the other bays…

Just on full low tide, the start was already quite some work to drag the boat out and to carry all the gear down…

The full wind shelter was only existing in my own bay, and I should have climbed up a small hill to know the forecast was not wrong. It is stupid to fight the wind…I still made 3-4 km/h on flat water with small wind chop, but couldn’t really say I was enjoying myself. Just wasting my energy.

The beach access was looong on low tide...and blocked higher up with a reef

I at least paddled around the corner into the next bay, where the chart said “sandy” as well, but the beach access on full low tide was just that much longer than on my last bay and eventually too rocky higher up. It made no sense to call it a day here after my stupid decision to paddle at all today.

So I did what I can’t remember I ever had to do – I paddled back into my old bay where there was reasonable access on lowest tide, just a bit of sliding my poor baby over sharp edged but small rocks…for the second time this morning…

I paddled 3,5 km overall, probably 40 min into the next bay, 10 min checking out the new beach to realize it was inaccessible on low tide, and only 10 min back, for nothing but the experience I could use my energy better than on this kind of morning exercise.

So same old story again – unloading, making camp, dragging the boat up…and time to have breakfast! I relaxed a bit in the tent over a book, before I went for a walk to explore the rocky coastline. I saw a cave on my way back I liked to explore from land now!

I explored the rocks...
PA240205.JPG
...and it's pools...

...one for the left knee to dip...

one for the right knee...

The rocks were creating most exotic bays and pools filled with sea water – if it would be warmer, they would be the perfect bath tubs! Really inviting!

PA240208.JPG
Or rather both at the same time? If it would have been warmer...perfect bath tubs!
PA240209.JPG
This dry pools is just getting filled on the left side by the occasional swell wave on high tide...

The cave was not as exciting as it looked from the sea, but I could have camped in it, having a sandy beach inside, as it was obviously mostly dry on high tide!

A perfect camp cave, mostly dry on high tide, with sandy bottom

Lust a kayak wide gully

I kept on walking uphill for a great overview over the bay area, and spottes as yesterday in the rocky mountains plenty of guanacos and some sheep.

PA240221.JPG
One of the many "guanaco toilets"...beans of any color shade, age and dryness state

Either the sheep or probably rather the guanacos are really organized when it comes to go for a dump of their bean-sized poop – they have special “toilet” places where the beans are piling up high – more or less dark as they were more or less fresh…interesting…

PA240210.JPG
well...long ago this must have been a sheep...

I could spot as well a long fence from an estancia area and the matching wheel track, but not a single soul out there. It is amazing, in wilderness you are always looking for the odd sign of mankind, but when you find some, it is mostly rubbish or disturbing your peace or splitude you are seeking for yourself on such a trip…

PA240225.JPG
This guanaco didn't like the dryness either...

The last part of my walk led me through a deep canyon of a dry river, none of the rivers here have water now. But you could see the reasonable fresh spots of the animals around looking for the last drop from the last rain in the now dry mud on the bottom of the canyon. It was about 2-3 m high, and 5-8 m wide, so quite a bed for a river flowing at rainy times here!

PA240215.JPG
My little cactus...

I spent the rest of the day repairing some loops on my tent and improving my gear here and there, and cooking a reasonable pasta dinner.

Yesterday night I was so tired from the little sleep in Camarones that I as soon as I started relaxing on my sleeping pad inside the fly-free warm tent, I fell asleep and didn’t wake until 9 pm, just about able to make a brief sat phone update and falling asleep again. My “dinner” for that night were just some half-rotten strawberries with meringue…yummy, but not really the best food for dinner only…

Tomorrow is good wind again, so I’m looking forward to give it a go again, exploring all the new bays ahead! I hope that German sailboat is still anchoring in that bay…
