A peaceful rest day in an air conditioned room. I am feeling how my skin recovers and my energy comes back. What a difference the temperatures make!

I spoke again to David Gomez, the boss of the coast guard station in Puerto Bolivar, how to continue my trip. The fore cast looks doable this night, 12 knots with gusts up to 15 knots during the second half of the night, until maybe 7 am?

We will load my kayak tonight at 11 pm, driving around midnight back to my spot, and starting there maybe 1.30 am-2 am. Still some moon shining, and the seas should be not too high. I will not take any camping gear and can paddle easier empty – and, just in case, get “rescued” on the boat much easier. But there will be no “just in case…”, just the option to stop anywhere on the water without needing to find a suitable landing beach. Good. Thanks to the Armada de Colombia to play the “head through the wall” game with me! That first finishing morning we will drive back to Puerto Bolivar and I can get back to my air conditioned room.

“Only dead fish are swimming with the current!”

As the next three nights are similar fore cast, I may already judge how far I may be getting in these conditions. On the 2nd -4th of May, the fore cast is quite easy winds – perfect to get around the northernmost cape with the wind quite down! Then, it’s one day going south east with the wind maybe already helping, and one easy “downhill” day to the boarder of Colombia.

I should be finished paddling all over latest on the 6th of May, driving back on the 7th, and to the airport in Riohacha on early morning the 8th. There, I have to stamp in again into Colombia, as my original plan was to leave via Venezuela. But this should be also no problem. Now, I hope the wind won’t be too strong during the night hours on the two main capes, and all goes according to this plan to finish Colombia right in time!

Cam

The shoreline ahead, between Cabo de la vela and Puerto Bolivar looks very rugged, with jagged cliffs after the cape and no obvious easy landings, except for a marginal beach midway through which seems prone to heavy surf. So your plan to be picked up and not to camp may be just right. The satellite image on Google maps shows some long period waves refracting around the cape. I hope the wind is not blowing straight onshore when you make it there. Otherwise it will be an “interesting” ride for you. Looking forward to your update once you are safe in Puerto Bolivar. By they way, that’s a coal loading port; hopefully there isn’t too much coal dust blowing in the air if there are ships loading. Have a safe journey.

That would be a nice “plus,” to be able to fishing Columbia right on time; but I am glad that you have respected your body’s needs, and put them first.

Hope you have an easy night, Freya, especially since you can now look forward to some time off. Happy paddling!
