Someone was crab feasting here - not me though...

The forecast for today got worse this morning – the weather window to pass those 20 km until I was sure to find a safe landing bay again felt too short – plus when I woke as usually at 5.30 am, it was raining cats and dogs, until 9 am, and then the wind came up hard. It was not weather to start a new paddling day, with the outlook to get caught with 25 knots headwind early before lunch and before I may have passed to the bay behind Isla Rupert.

So another boring weather rest day – well, when it’s raining outside like it did this morning, it was not too hard to make that decision.

But during the day, spells of short sunshine came up again and again, where it became quite warm in the tent, but only between long hard rain squalls with gusts up to probably over 30 knots. I had the shelter of the wall of pine trees on my side, but I heard in the wind noise how the strong gusts where whipping the trees. So basically it was the right decision not to start.

The forecast for tomorrow seems to be stable with westerly winds under 20 knots, also coming more from the west north west than from south west, and going fully down toward the afternoon, so I’d be safe paddling as far a s I’d like to. Tuesday seem to be easy winds as well.

I was again not much outside the tent today, the sunny spells were simply only a few minutes, until the dark clouds came back. But once, when I walked briefly outside to wash my pot and to get some fresh water from the stream just besides me for my lunch pasta, I had three visitors close to my tent – probably a fox mama with her two kids. The mama stayed for a while, completely fearless of that strange human being in that strange red house, barked a bit hoarse to me, and in Germany I’d have suspected this fox would have rabies, being so fearless…I was sure not to get attacked, but was checking my available weapons – rocks and my paddle…but at some point she disappeared again.

I was checking my chart for the legs ahead, and was wondering if I’d could pass Isla Emiliano Figueroa at the end of Magellan Strait on the eastern side? My chart shows a clear gap, but very narrow. This would be a better sheltered way to paddle north than passing only east of Isla Tamor ond west of Isla Emiliano Figueroa. Does anyone have a better chart who could confirm that you can pass there?

A few times I hear long lasting motor noises from passing boats. The hardest work today was to adjust the tent ventilation according the stormy or sunny spells, and to find a position for my body which was not sore from lying around so much…I’d rather want to paddle!!! But tomorrow…

Or may be this one?? If it is a gap, that’d be the question too. There are just so many to choose from, but I’d have thought to get to the other one you’d have to go too far east?

Both the chart and google earth photo indicate a narrow open passage between Isla Emillano Figueroa and Mainland about 4 kilometers in length.

The chart indicates rocks at both entrances. Google earth shows passage is 25 meters wide at its narrowest point near the North end. There are no depths indicated on the chart. This passage is probably too narrow and shallow for use by any class of vessel.

North entrance (google) S52 53′ 59″ W73 21′ 46″

Speculation: I think it is passable. It might be necessary to wait for a favorable tide. My guess is that there might be significant currents. It’s probably worth taking a detour to check it out. You’d need local knowledge to be sure.

Gap mentioned by Freek, behind Emiliano Figueroa Island at eastern side is shown much wider in official chart n°10000 from SHOA, Chilean Navy, than what looks like in google earth sat picture, which has very good resolution for that point, I can even see the kelp lines there. A 25 meter gap as Caro said.
Foxes will not attack you, but do not leave any food reachable not even inside the tent; they will open or rip the tent for it.
Good luck with the weather tomorrow.

Hi Freya!. The foxes just want food, while their babies do not touch!
We see a clear narrow path about 25 meters in these coordinates 52 ° 54,091 ‘Z 73 ° 21,518’ W. good night!

Frances Price

I sometimes have a night visitor, a fox who loves to eat peanuts that I leave outdoors for the birds and the squirrels. Perhaps your mama fox is hoping for a handout! 🙂
Sorry you are confined to the tent; such confinement can indeed make one stiff and sore, and bored, too. One can only read for so long without risking crossed eyes, lol!
Hope you get to paddle safely tomorrow.
