A relaxing day for body and skin

Pos: here
Loc: Chichirivice
Acc: Nelson + Annya’s holiday house

A good night’s sleep in an air conditioned room, with my head wrapped as usual in a scarf, my sleeping mask on and earplugs in to get maximum rest. There is nothing like a sleep in a safe, cool and bug free environment! I even heard a baby this morning – were Anja and Nelson that quick in their hammock last night? 🙂

[pe2-image src=”http://lh6.ggpht.com/-IMls1i3T8z8/UjUf_DLcDLI/AAAAAAAAW8g/xiJ1belKXBg/s144-c-o/P9120040.JPG” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/112133179186774955122/SouthAmericaSection2Stage15VenezuelaBoarderColombiaToCaracas#5923676052921257138″ caption=”Dayana’s and Ashley’s sweet 7-month old baby girl Amelya” type=”image” alt=”P9120040.JPG” ]

No, I didn’t know the house had more visitors last night, and I even felt guilty to occupy the only bedroom. Two more members of the kayak club of Venezuela, Dayana and Ashley with baby Amelya, grandma Nora and dog Woody arrived to join us today and to help with advice along the next coast. We figured out a few good places to stay, thanks for all your help! We had some more Italian food for lunch, this time with air condition. I learned a lot how Venezuela’s economy works – or not works…

A small tour of the city and street along the swamps gave me some impression of where I was. The swamps are beautiful nature, unfortunately decorated with trash and house discards allover. The village showed again it was a busy holiday town, and I learned to have been glad not to “cross” the motorboat highway to the islands last night. Tomorrow morning at 6 am it will be much less busy and less dangerous! I had enough of one “run over” by such a high speed thing…

Thanks for all your help today, Nelson, Anja, Ashley and Dayana! I notice in Venezuela there is nothing like a great network of friend… in Puerto Cabello, Christian and Cesar will be waiting for me to help and support, Edgar is unfortunately just now in Europe. Thanks! Then around Caracas/ La Guiara it will be David and Antonio, and many more people later, I am sure.

My new kayak seems to be on the way to me, it is already in the port and on the way to get out of customs with Antonios and Davids help. Edgar has opted for  the old one…there are so few imported kayaks here in Venezuela,  mine will be a good addition to the 50+ people of the Kayak Club Venezuela!

Wow Glen and Scott You are both so helpful.
Thank goodness for the support of community and friends.

The Hennessey hammock is ideal for jungle camping with an intrinsic bug netting and light weight with a rain fly in case you need something other than a tent. If you contact Hennessey they would probably comp you an expedition hammock with an asymmetrical fly.

If the swamps are mangrove and merge into the coast, it will give you an idea of what your camping and paddling options are going to be for long stretches to come. At low tide you’ll have to stay far out to avoid running aground on mud flats (even with the shallow draft of the kayak). Camping with a tent will often be impractical and the choice will be either slinging a hammock in the mangrove or sleeping in the kayak. The good camping hammocks are the equivalent of a suspended tent, with protection from rain and insects. The beginning and end of your paddling day will have to co-incide with high tide.
