This dried guy had quite some sharp teeth!

Pos: here
Loc: Cabo Bascunan Bahia Sarco
Acc: tent
Dist: 46,5 km
Start: 8:15 End: 16:50

Tomorrow:
Estimated landing: Huasco
Estimated starting time: Right after sunrise
Estimated landing time: Well before sunset

What a great sleep! No worries about people visiting, about the launching, no dogs barking, roosters singing, frogs noise…just a very light rain.

The light drizzle unfortunately kept on going all morning, and the visibility was low. Also the wind, which made the paddling actually deadly boring. Not much to see, not much to play. But we started a song contest! Hahaha…

The weather soon changed after lunch, when we already left Isla Chanaral sunken in the drizzle to the left.

The landscape also changed since yesterday, it had way more dunes than rocks, and it also became pretty flat hinterland. Combined with the low swell, we spotted many suitable landing spots. But onls one single jumping dolphin!

We were working our way from visible headland to visible headland, and finally got a great wind push on almost flat swell. Then, paddling was nice again!

Turning almost east around Cabo Bascunan, the water was dead calm, and we picked the first sandy beach, despite it had a few larger round rocks before the sand. But this was no problem on the calm sea today!

I landed first and jumped out in the shallows, and carefully directed my boat through the round rocks up the white sandy beach. Already on the sand, I just shouldn’t have been falling on my bum while lifting the bow a bit over the rocks on dragging, as unfortunately I also drooped my heavy loaded boat from about 20 cm only on a small ca. 15 cm round rock. It gave a circular crack in the gel coat, which I later better sealed with some epoxy glue.

The two hours after making camp were eventually blessed with a bit of sunshine! Peter enjoyed a shave, while I was working on my finger nails…idyllic scenery! 🙂 Not that we arrive scrubby tomorrow in Husaco for refilling water…

Hi Freya, glad to hear your making great progress. How do you find the new rudder system in your new P65n ?
I’ve been paddling the P65n XP18 for the past two years. Lovely boat !
May wind and swell be always at your back.

Hearing of the two instances of you damaging the gelcoat on your boat makes me feel better about having stayed with the poly plastic on my touring kayak.I encounter lots of rocks on my river trips. It a little heavier. But hard to damage beyond minor scratches.Glad you had a good day.Safe paddling. Randall

Your blog has a very interesting component to it. With the use of google earth I am able to follow your progress along the coast in fine detail. I can see that the Peru – Chili deep sea trench is very close to the coast, I can discover that these seas are possibly the richest in the world as far as marine life is concerned and watch a video on the conservation of the anchovy and its importance to the whole ecosystem and as you get closer to the Atacama desert I can speculate on what the afternoon sea breezes would be like later in the year as summer approaches due to the differential in temperature of the Humbolt current and the desert. I should imagine ,or at least hope that you are getting some assistance from the northward flowing current and I can see the sand dunes of which you speak.
Thank You – enjoy your journey, I wish you calm seas and gentle following breezes.
