It was such a pleasant day and such a relaxing contrast to paddling on the sea. It is all about changing scenery! Not only in the landscape and in paddling conditions, but also from zero company to having a paddling partner for a day. I urgently needed a local guide to find my way from one lagoon to the next, and Leo was living on the other side of the Lagoa dos Quadros, perfect! 🙂

We set in early, and despite there would have been a perfect campsite just on the concrete jetty,I was rather happy to have rested yesterday afternoon in Gustavs house to do some online work and download of the upcoming lagoon maps. And to sleep once more in an a/c room. Thank to Gustav and his wife!

It was a magic lovely morning, the scenery of the first long lagoon was just so absolutely lovely peaceful and calm. Leo and I paddled relaxed along, chatting interested about this and that. A low head wind came up, which was fortunately dieing very soon again to a dead calm lake with high mountains with some villages and the road to the right and a low scenery with few houses and many reed grass to the left. Some high reed grass was growing in long jutting outpoints from the eastern side, and we were either cutting just through or at least had a look from one jetty where where the best way would beto keep on going without too much detour. The wooden jetty came in really handy also as a nice rest spot where we had some fun playing around. Leo said he was not used to paddle for so many hours without a break – what if we would have paddled out there on the sea together? I am used to keep on going slowly but surely, with many stops on the water, but without landing, and any surplus landing through that surf I would have avoided. But here on the lakes it is nice to stop where it comes in handy!

When I was eventually finding the entry to the first channel according to my GPS point, it was again different world of paddling! If the first lake may have already been somewhere in Germany where they had mountains (minus the last few palm trees and some banana plantations and with much warmer water than at home),the connecting channel was almost like my small “home”river Treene at high water level! With some nice current, we were slowly mostly drifting only along the many windings, enjoying the lush bird wildlife with a stork, vultures, herons, and many others I can not name. Nice Churrasco and milk cows grazing on the meadows, just like home! Really pleasant! Just amazing (and glad) that there is no canoe rental for everybody to enjoy this lovely piece of nature.

[pe2-image src=”http://lh3.ggpht.com/-lwR2qOqUAyc/VRhERy4nXzI/AAAAAAAAnTw/hj7Cb7nS08M/s144-c-o/IMG_1700.JPG” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/112133179186774955122/SouthAmericaSection3Stage24Brazil7UruguayArgentinaFlorianapolisToBuenosAires#6131725965172629298″ caption=”Who is in the zoo here?” type=”image” alt=”IMG_1700.JPG” ]

Getting out of the first channel and into the second lagoon presented us with some moderate 13 knots headwind, and now came the well rested strong young man with the empty boat to the challenge, probably sick of chatting with me, leaving the tired burnt out old lady with the 80 kg barge just seeing his rear lights disappearing, and I was finding myself quickly hundreds meters behind. I remembered to have asked him to leave his sail at home? 🙂 I eventually was allowed to catch up again for a second, until the same game went on, to top off the so far really lovely day paddling together.

[pe2-image src=”http://lh3.ggpht.com/-173mx6y0j9w/VRhERVGRv4I/AAAAAAAAnTw/2kyUYmg8bCk/s144-c-o/IMG_1697.JPG” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/112133179186774955122/SouthAmericaSection3Stage24Brazil7UruguayArgentinaFlorianapolisToBuenosAires#6131725957176868738″ caption=”Paddling through more or less thick fileds of reed is normal on the lagoons” type=”image” alt=”IMG_1697.JPG” ]

Male paddling partner are ALL the same! (well, besides my very own Peter…) And I knew that before.. You may have asked them before the day starts to please stay together and not to paddle far ahead as I will be much slower with the heavy boat, but at some point you carry the red lantern and he is getting impatient without even noticing and you find yourself paddling harder than you should 🙂 – No complaints, I knew exactly what I was up to, having experienced the same game again and again on occasion. When I was asking Leo to swap boats to get him to carry my 50 kg more of load he kindly rejected…I paddled for a while in racing style in his wake which is always amazingly working, even clipped my bowline secretly and jokingly into his rear deck lines, but nothing was working to stop this fast man and caring to paddle side by side with the slow old lady…!:-))

Eventually Leo showed me a really nice remote campsite close to a high sand dune, and I earned my well deserved rest, watching Leo paddling across “his” lake back home. It was a pleasant paddling day anyway allover! Thanks for escorting me!

My blog has a lot of unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any methods to help reduce content from being stolen? I’d certainly appreciate it.

My Brother and son were able to join me for a half day on one of my recent, fully loaded for ten days, heavy kayak river trips, and I was able to talk both of them into paddling my kayak for two miles or so. They gained a real new respect for me and what I was doing and was certainly ready to swap boats again. You know its just the man thing, why I can’t answer, that makes the guy show his ability for speed.Enjoy the new scenery.Safe Paddling.

Excellent description of such a beautifull scenery. Freya’s entries are getting each day better and better if possible! Thanks to Freya, along her journey we have learned so much about geography and people of this “late-to-bed going continent” (the best description ever of our home continent, haha).
God bless!

Frances Price

I am finally able to catch up with you, Freya, after several days of not having time to read your blog. I was having withdrawal, haha! When paddling with others, I try to follow the rule that is used for going through caves: you never leave a buddy behind, and only go as fast as the slowest person in the group. Perhaps Leo was overwhelmed with the joy of rushing along over the water.
I think it would be an honor to be asked to paddle the kayak of the great Freya, and experience a little of what it is like to move a fully-loaded sea kayak, so Leo really missed out.
It is good that you can take such things in your stride, Freya. Happy paddling; I hope you continue to enjoy the beauty of the lagoons.

Marcio R. Pereira

My friend Leo is really a great partner for paddling , Freya is welcome to the north coast lakes.

Karen

Sounds beautiful Freya!
Sometimes my partner, Rob, needs to leave me in his wake, he just needs to get some exercise.
As we know you are doing the monumental task of circumnavigating SA by kayak where no man or woman has gone:)
Notice when the competitive drive kicks in. Praise or blame, honor or dishonor, gain of loss, happiness or sorrow theses eight worldly winds arise in our daily lives disrupting the equanimity. It is similar to a pebble thrown into a calm pond and you see the ripples stretch out so too when we grasp onto one of these winds they take us from the present.
Enjoy!
