Rocks with the red lichen

Acc: tent
Dist: 48,9 km

The “Noise of the Night” were this time no birds or frogs, but the tiny swell moving up and down the shallow beach, making the 10-15 cm rocks roll up and down…so again earplugs. There is nothing like a quiet sleep.

The day started with very low hanging clouds, I was almost paddling in fog…but as soon as the friendly tiny southerly breeze lifted, the clouds moved and the day became nice and friendly again! In the afternoon even that sunny I got really hot in my dry suit! But this was only for about half an hour…

Campsites are as rare here as it can be, not a single beach to be seen, not to talk about a beach you can camp on…so the only sites would be a big rock, which I’m on now as well. They are not too bad to camp on, as long as the padding is sufficient to even out the holes – there is never a full flat, full smooth rock place! And the dragging up of the boat is not the best boat treatment…

I talked to Peter about the long term weather forecast for the Golfo de Penas crossing – tomorrow are still easy light friendly southerlies in the morning, then turning to northerlies around 10 knots, rising…rising on Thursday to ugly headwinds around twenty knots, staying like that probably Friday, Saturday and maybe even Sunday – ha! Now we have the right weather for the Gulf crossing! Just in time :-(( It would have been too easy if it stayed calm even more days…

Regarding my not endless supplies and batteries, and as well as staying probably three or more days on the beach is not much fun, I decided to take the about 20 km detour to the Navy station on Isla San Pedro, which is now about 30 km away from here. I didn’t have a single full rest day for the last two weeks, and even in Puerto Eden I stayed only half a day…so the Navy station just comes right now! Though I’d rather NOT paddle the detour! But I’m hoping I’m as welcome as I was at the other Navy stations! I’ll be arriving around 2 pm or so…I really could use at least one full rest day!

If it would be only one or maybe two days at the beach, I’d not paddle the detour, and I may have paddled a full and not only a half day tomorrow, but I’m feeling the turn to the north wind will come in the afternoon heavier than I can take with my worn out state, and I may have only paddled 25-30 km into the Estero Policarpo anyway to find a good shelter from the north wind.

I already crossed the channel this morning, and did chose later to take the smaller channel to the left, which was way more calm than the main channel! From the Navy station later, I’ll have to cross back 15 km due east to reach the first closest headland again, and I’ll have to watch the sea state by then after the long ugly wind session.

It would be nice if I could get any comments on this post from people who have already paddled the Golfo de Penas, regarding campsites and coastal conditions!

It would be as well nice to get proper GPS positions where to take out of the river to start the portage and to put in into the lagoon! I think most people paddled it the other way, which may be more obvious to see! Thanks!

Hi Freya!
My friends Roy, On and I have paddled from Pt. Montt to Pt. Natales via Golfo DE Penas in janurary 2009. The downhill route…
At the blog of our trip you can find a map with all the campsites we visited, including Golfo De Pennas.
http://seakayakingpatagonia.blogspot.com/
The way I remember it, the campsite right in the middle of Golfo De Pennas (47°27’25″S 074°26’3.52″W) is a good shelter in the middle of Golfo De Pennas. However, it was very narrow beach with the tide almost at the tent. From the shelter of Isla Javier to that point (abou 45 km) there is no reasonable shelter.
As for the entrance to the river for the portage, It is a bit difficult to find, as the river mouth changes greatly from the maps. I don’t have any coordinates for the exact point as we paddled downstream which was easier (all rives flows to sea…).
Hope it’s some help, if there is anything you might need, Karel has a way to reach me.
Good luck,
Yos.

Thomas

Hi Freya,

Ken is right!

Error: Option One: follow a small tributary from true left of the main river. S46 40′ 50″ W74 02′ 18″

Ken

I have not travelled the route across Istmo Ofqui. This information was derived from Google Earth.

The trail appears well defined on Google Earth from
S46 40′ 40″ W74 01′ 54″ to the beach at S46 40′ 10″ W74 00′ 55″

The 500 meters distance between the trail and the river looks to be swampy ground. There may be a path but it is hard to discern if there is one. See the note below.

Definition: If you are facing downstream True Left is the bank on your left. True Right is the bank on your right.

Two possibilities:

Option One: follow a small tributary from true right of the main river. S46 40′ 50″ W74 02′ 18″

About 300 meters up the creek it makes a sharp bend to the East. Follow for another 100 meters to find a path on true right bank S46 40′ 45″ W74 02′ 08″ As noted, the path is not well defined here on Google Earth. This is as close as you can get by water.

Option Two: continue following the main river past a sharp bend to
S46 40′ 38″ W74 02′ 16″ and from there make your way to the trail.

Meike

hoffentlich kann dir einer mit den Koordinaten helfen. Leider sind sie nicht auf der Internetseite von Cristian Donoso, nur eine Beschreibung. Alles Gute Freya und gutes Wetter
grüsse aus DK

Hi Freya – i think you have a typo error in your location -97 instead of -47 . do you carry a SPOT gps locator ?
