On my morning sat phone call to my boyfriend Peter in Denmark I had to learn the horrible news Alejandro Daniel Carranza, my great friend and main contact in Argentina/ Buenos Aires, drowned on the 26th on his attempt to paddle the 30 km across to Staten Island on the south eastern corner of Argentina.
Juan Pablo Darczecyn, his friend and fellow paddler, survived. Ale’s body is already found, Juan Pablo is not evacuated yet due to bad weather. Hopefully he is already safe by now. I do not know more yet besides the short e-mail Peter forwarded me this morning via sat phone text he got from a mutual friend.
My thoughts and remembering will always be with you, Alejandro. You are too much connected to my trip around South America as I will ever forget you. Thank you for all your selfless help you gave me. Thank you for all your connections you shared with me. Thank you for being my friend. It will be a hard time to arrive in Buenos Aires again, and not to find you there any more.
Virginia, you have been the greatest partner for Ale, and all my feelings are with you now. I’m so sorry for you. Thank you as well, for hosting me, and for being my logistic manager together with Ale. You are a great friend, too.
Juan Pablo, I don’t know what to say to you. You were always so cheerful, though we couldn’t really talk due to out language barrier. Life is going on for you, and I know one day you’ll find your smile again.

I have no words for this… Alejandro was a known remarkable sportsman in Prefectura Ushuaia I knew him for four years since I came here. I´m too sad and upset for his lost.
I just received news that Juan Pablo has been successfully rescued and is safe and sound aboard the PNA ship. Very comforting news Freya will be pleased to know. Thanks.
