The dreaded surf was quite down this morning, and we both got out dry and safe.
After a while, I had to ask Peter if he thought everything was ok with his paddle…why? I eventually noticed that somehow we managed to swap a paddle half – I was paddling with his bigger wing blade on the left, and he had my smaller wing blade on his left side! And I was wondering why I had always to steer to the left…
Soon the fat monster jelly fish invasion arrived – most of the were swimming about 3-4 meter down under us and only a few just under the surface, but their size of up to more than a meter, with an about 50 cm red-brownish coloured head and a bright white fleshy tail made them shine through the clear water. I couldn’t count them at all, they must have been many hundreds over the day! Who wants to go swimming??
I even saw a few all red ones, instead of the bright white tail it was red allover. Yuck – but somehow beautiful…
A tiny 2 cm fish decided to present himself as dinner by jumping on my kayak, but I told hím he needs to grow a little before he should offer himself again!
Punta Paquica, a long high protruding headland with many, many seals, also has high white cliffs – white from all the bird shit! We saw something new today – four probably young guys climbing in the steep cliffs, and shuffling many huge white sacks to probably a few loading points close to the cliff edges. They seem to have collected the guano – by scraping it off the rocks, or by hammering big lumps out of it? What a (shitty) job! But obviously it was it worth while, seeing those piles of sacks!
We were passing two low sandy headlands which had a huge bunch of colourful holiday houses. Just wondering when the season is starting? The surf was rolling up there quite a bit, no place to land!
Our destination was just around Punta Arenas, a very nice sheltered beach in a deep bay. A beautiful, easy landing! a bunch of curious local fisher men were greeting us, and seemed to be quite impressed by our trip 🙂
A calm night is waiting with no surf!!! Just the local highway is close…
