I woke early, as I couldn’t find a peaceful rest with my “bad trip conscience” – I had to talk to Andres about that matter, how I felt I hadn’t “worked my passage” yet due to my stupid sea sickness, and about the options to get me back to my pick up spot. Well…they could fly me out with the kayak attached to the rails, but only slow and a few km across the fjord’s end to the open sea. Still there would be about 100 km skipped…or I could paddle out…or maybe we can find another boat going south again?

Well, *this* same boat is going to the same spot again tomorrow, Andres said, with a new guest group – PERFECTO! This was the solution! Just stay another day, enjoying a calm social barbecue dinner at night at the beach without the risk of getting sea sick again, sailing overnight in a nice bed to Puerto Montt, changing the guest group during the day, and sailing the next night back to my original pick up point in Bahia Tic Toc!

In this way I had two nice rest days on this amazing boat with a bunch of amazing people! Thanks! It was an unplanned rest, but first of all well deserved after my paddling efforts, I think :-), and secondly very much welcome! Especially now when I know I will get back to my spot!

Breakfast was very well appreciated with plenty of things I have not eaten for months! They had even some good kind of German grainy bread with a lot of seeds and grains! This was the best part of the breakfast, apart from the fresh raspberry juice, plus fresh orange juice, fresh Blueberries, raspberries and pineapple, a ham and cheese omelet with fresh mushrooms…I was really feasting on the offer after I had to skip the dinner last night…life on this boat is GOOD! 🙂 Thanks for giving me the chance to be here and relax.

Ready to go rafting!

The guys are ready for a wet rafting session with the guides Cristian and Ignacio

This trip with this small group with just those six friends of Andres, the owner of the “NOMADS of THE SEA”, is a three days trip, and I met the guys in their second day. When they had been yesterday kayaking in the small archipelago, seal and penguin watching with the jet boat, and visited a glacier with the helicopter, today’s activities started with a helicopter flight out to a short rafting trip in the morning, which was unfortunately full with the small group in two inflatable rafts, but I was allowed to join them on the drop off flight with the helicopter! I got a very different perspective on Fjordland in this way from the air! Not that I was first time flying in a small 6-seated helicopter, but it is always exciting! And maybe I was not too unhappy to stay dry today…so I waved the guys good bye and flew back with the pilot (obviously…) to land on the boat. Nice landing on the small helicopter platform of a boat floating in the middle of the Fjord! I even saw the pilot later doing a landing on the already moving boat…

I was talking for a while to Ricardo from Panama, who had not joined the rafting, and had a bit of free time to write yesterday’s update, until the guys were back. Soon they were getting ready for the next “job” – fly fishing in a river…dropped by the helicopter again. This time I was not even keen on joining them…fly fishing is not really my business. But I got my second helicopter flight for the day for dropping them off! I had to change seats for the flight back, to be able to sit beneath the pilot, but we were landing in a shallow river and I had no water shoes on…a member simply took me on his back and walked me round 🙂 – though I could have climbed…

We have to hit the helicopter platform!

For lunchtime I was the only “guest” left on the boat, and I was interested to see the crew’s rooms and got served a yummy empanada plus cinnamon ice cream .  A late lunch+dinner was planned as a barbecue on a nice meadow owned by a local fisher man, close to a natural hot spring. Not that we needed to take a boat to get there…the helicopter served all again  – quick, dry, warm, fast…I could use one of those toys! So three flight back and forth today…

We arrived at the beautiful location, and in a wooden hut they were frying a whole lamb over the open fire in Asado style, plus some chicken and steak and salads and potatoes and…all for us eight people only! We were sitting under a big open tent with a magnificent Fjord view, and had really a great time. Lots of “male” jokes though… :-)) LOL!

Then it was time to soak in the natural hot spring…we had to *walk* (no heli flight this time…) for five minutes up a path through the “jungle” until a hot spring was forming a natural hot pool. Ahhhhh! What a life! And yes, we got served champagne…the cold river was just 10 meters through the bush for the bold ones for a change…

Bill, thinking "what am I doing here?" :-), Thomas in good champagne spirit...

Apropos “changing” – the staff even had carried a portable black changing cabin to the site, which I was told to use – who was hiding from whom then? The seven guys changing outside the cabin from me, or myself changing inside? I probably could get a better peak from inside than them from outside 🙂

P3210353.JPG
The hottest zodiac on board!

Honestly, I really enjoyed this night and the great company of the seven guys and their talks, just what the doctor ordered after those long lonely days in Fjordland. A big thanks to Andres being so generous to make such a magnificent experience possible for us all!

P3210352.JPG
It didn't match me also riding this horse... 🙁

We flew back with last light, I was on the second drop this time. The boat had already started moving toward a very narrow Fjord, where we are anchored just now. The two maybe a little drunk guys in the back seat of the helicopter (I was on the front seat this time) were challenging the pilot to “Play it hard, captain!” – means to fly “dangerous” curves and sharp bents around forest corners and rock walls…I’d rather be kayaking…but we all landed safe again on the moving boat’s helicopter platform.

Now it was time to sit on the front deck to enjoy the drive into the very narrow fjord, the Estero Quintupeo (42.1870 72.3958), where we are anchoring now…It was eventually dark, and time to deploy the next toys – strong spotlights illuminating the water fall across the steep rock wall, plus another huge spot was shining on the rock wall like it was time to start the movie…Campbell also pulled out a very strong laser pointer, and started to “write” on the illuminated waterfall and “movie screen”…men at play…

The guys have now a “secret YPO meeting”, they are outside in the smoker’s lounge with a few cigars .-(( , and I have a bit of time to write the events of the day – wouldn’t want to miss it!  Thanks again to Andres for hosting me and letting me be part of the trip! It’s a very different life for those two days – we will be driving to Puerto Montt  tonight, changing the guest group during the day, and will drive back to exactly the same spot in Bahia Tic Toc where they picked me up and I did interrupt my trip for those two rest days. Sometimes you just have to follow your destiny…

You lucky lucky blighter. I was telling the family how you fell on your feet and all Ian said was: “All you have to do is paddle around SA, so off with you then!” May be not…
Enjoy yourself, you deserve a treat.

Some people have (and earn) all the luck! However, just remember two things about helicopters: (1) They operate by beating the air into submission — but, sometimes the air fights back; and (2) They are only really happy when they are lying on their sides with the occupants all piled up on the “down” side of the cabin.
