My dry dune camp, the flooded wetland area. In the background some more or less dry sand belt before the sea starts.

The night was a rough one…the tent was making loud noises in the barely sheltered dunes, and at 2am the thunderstorm started – a very strange one!
First I thought someone was shining a light at my tent, but here is really NO ONE…it was the kind of lightning which we call in Germany “Wetterleuchten” – extremely bright, extremely often.
Every two to five seconds the light was on, mostly so bright I could even use sun glasses in my red tent! I tried sticking my head out to see the lights, but no way – my eyes would hurt!
So back to more or less sleep, the thunder was moderate, and the rain started quite low and late.
The lightening didn’t stop until an hour after daylight! But a heavy rain came down at about 7am, and I already yesterday declared today a rest day…

Forecast was almost the same as yesterday, nne 15 to 20 kn, then a bit lower during noon nne 10 to 15 kn, the strong again nw 15 to 20 knots.
I assumed the surf would be still very up with the onshore wind, and would rather wait until offshore calmer winds forecast for Thursday morning would make it lower.

One thing I expected during the high tide of the night – that the soft sandy 750 m to my dune would be flooded…and it was. I tried walking in the less than knee deep water on the sand, it would be ok, and I was not sure if I’d not just float out my boat and gear to the “real” shore or if I’d be stuck and would have to work even harder…and if I’d be able to handle the surf…though high tide was around 2pm.

My soaking deep wet sand traces - 5 times, 750 m each, back and forth!

I felt 100 times guilty today for not have gone out, as the wind calmed down to nothing in the early day, then changed to offshore wsw 15-20 knots, and then calmed down to wsw 10 knots…which made the flooded sand stretch dry again, plus – so far I could see in the distance from my dune – lowered the surf to reasonable size…

But I decided my body and mind needed a rest, and as getting boat and gear out to the water line would take more than an hour, I filled my day with useful things like checking and repairing gear, painting my toe nails and shaving here and there :-)) – still looking out multiple times and thinking: “I should be out there…!”
Maybe I missed my chance to float my gear across – now the flat sand is dry again, and tomorrow morning the shifting work would start again…forecast for tomorrow morning is not ideal with still offshore winds, but hope I can make it at least to a “reasonable” camp spot without dragging the boat and gear too much.

...but civilisation was *there*...somehow.

My only visitors today were two cows I spotted over the dune, but I rather chased them away with some shouts before they become to curious…

I followed your Australia adventure. My sister and I did several kayak days in the Sea of Cortez in 2006, and we are now reading your SA trip. You are such an inspiration, and your writing is quite fine. I am interested in any natural phenomenon you witness and describe, and am impressed with the fact that you pass bays rather than skirt the shoreline. This is a truly awesome experience for me, and it has to be a glorious experience for you. Paddle on!!

Intense lightening on the beach in a tent sounds beautifully surreal and scarey…i’m sure it raises awareness of just how alive you are at that moment. Be safe.
