Well…the original forecast for today was low south winds under 10 kn…but unfortunately Karel, my reliable Dutch weatherman sitting in Israel, had to “upgrade” the wind to a 15-22 kn sse in the morning and for the afternoon “only” a 10-15 kn sse…and seas 1,80 m to 2,50 m. Those seas create, going directly onshore, an ugly wide and rough surf belt…nothing to go out, even not in the afternoon…
The ugly turn an lift of the wind started at 1 am, and as I didn’t really have a choice in these dunes to find shelter with my tent, I had to get out in the pitch dark night and to fasten my guy lines on my tent. If they are tight to max, my reliable Hilleberg Allak tent holds up a lot!
But my camp side was on bigger cobbles mixed with sand, and I couldn’t really get the long and wide sand pegs in last night, and eventually rather used the smaller ones and loaded a heavy pile of rocks on top. I should have done that properly last evening already!
It rarely happens I don’t have rock solid guy line pegs, but for sure this night it did! It is not really a pleasure to get up at night and to do the job, sometimes in heavy rain as well. But my rain came later, mixed with the flying sand, so that in the morning my boat and tent were black, covered with a mixture of black sand and rain water…nice picture!
The wind gradually went down during the day, but the surf stayed up…even if I’d were to paddle in the other direction – no chance to get out 🙁
Hope for tomorrow’s forecast – morning n 8-12 kn, afternoon n 15-20 kn, seas 1m to 1,30m…solid offshore wind should soften the surf down that I can get out – and then paddle, paddle, paddle! 60 km on the GPS to reach El Conodor, hope my “half” rudder does not annoy me too much. The landing should be allright with the offshore wind, or I simply go into the river mouth.
Though I have a date with a friend of Alejandro, Roberto, providing me with a holiday house! – And this should be on the beach, and not in the river mouth. But at least as I’m getting there…hope for the best. And I should get my rudder fin…
Today was boring as hell – I did two longer walks, but besides the ever roaring wide trashy surf belt, black beach sand and dunes and two farm houses behind the dune belt there was nothing really to see. No fishermen today…no cars. I first thought the closer farm house may be abandoned, but last night already I heard two dogs barking for hours – now I know why!
I’m quite sure the dogs spotted eventually my lit tent for a while from a dune where I saw the paw prints this morning…and as I climbed on my afternoon walk up one of those well pools from the wind water wheels to have a better overlook, the dogs spotted me again at the nearby farm house and started barking and running toward me…
Now I had the choice to stay on my high well edge and to expect four wild barking dogs standing under my ladder at some point, or I better climbed down fast and made my way to my tent – asap! :-))
I chose the latter, and saw later from my safe tent the dogs sniffing at the ladder…well, they had waving tails, but I never trust dogs, sorry…
I didn’t spot any sign of people from the high well edge at that farm house, no cars, no moves. Either they were off, or the dogs and a few chicken lived by themselves there…wouldn’t be surprised, as I spotted the dogs eating on quite a big carcass at some point…must last for a while…
I slept a lot, but hope to never have to put up my tent under an ever squeaking wind well tower…in case of emergency, I think I’d drink that water…though it tasted a bit salty for me. But no emergency yet. I’m used to rather have more than less water and food…
Without a book I got bored quite fast today…no chores to do, no repairs…but some how I managed the day to pass. Highlight on such day is to see if my computer still starts to write the update…after two tries it did today…and at least I could receive-mails on my mobile. But I always have to house hold with batteries power…so no long chats or such or computer games…
I WANT TO PADDLE TOMORROW!!! And to make it to El Condor…

I am heading out for 8 days on the Chesapeake Bay. I’m over half way through my circumnavigation of it. I’ll be thinking of you as I search for places to camp, fight the wind, and try to find fresh water. I know your challenges are many times greater. Thanks for the inspiration. I greatly admire you.
