Adelaide contact wanted

Hi freya,

We met briefly at sea near Narooma NSW on 5th February (the kayaker ‘of the other kind’ with the red sail). I’m keen to know if you will be following Paul Caffen’s route via Althorpe island and Kangaroo Island then crossing back to Cape Jervis. I will be in that area from Monday 23 with kayak for a few weeks. I will be based at Marion Bay on the bottom of Yorke Peninsular. I could meet you somewhere like Althorpe Island and give you some moral support in return for your inspirational deeds. And I have some local knowledge including a recent solo trip from Althorpe island to Cape Jervis via the north coast of Kangaroo Island.

As Rose has already said, there are limited opportunities between Cape Jervis and Victor Harbor.
My preference would be for Blowhole Beach (35° 39′ 15.25″ S 138° 09′ 19.8″ E. Resonably sheltered, and with vehicle access to within a couple of hundred metres.
Next along is Deep Creek, 35° 39′ 11.53″ S 138° 14′ 41″ E. Not as good, in my view, and access is a long walk down the hill.
Both Blowhole and Deep Creek are in the conservation park, and last time I was at Blowhole, several years ago now, rangers were happy to have kayakers camping.
Tunkalilla is open and exposed, usually with dumpy surf. Locals take vehicles down but I no longer have any contacts there. Next along is Waitpinga, a major surfing beach.
Along this stretch make sure you are with the tide and not against it. (The same is true in Investigator Strait, but along the Yorke Peninsula coast (boring!) much less of a problem than the coast of K Is.)
It’s a while since I paddled this stretch, but there is an Adelaide Canoe Club trip in the area this weekend (15-16 Nov).
I see that Mark Deuter has put his hand up as Adelaide contact, and I’d endorse that. He’s only a couple of streets from me.

Hi Freya & Greg,

I am an Adelaide sea kayaker, I live 5 mins away from Adelaide Airport and I would be very pleased to help by storing the van and spare kayak in my garage for 2 weeks from Nov 19, if you haven’t made any other arrangements yet. I’ll call Greg’s mobile to confirm.

Cheers

Von uns natürlich auch Thumbs up und we can do it 🙂 Gruß Ilona und Udo

It was lovely to speak with you freya, although I couldn’t hear you so well…phones do have their limitations. Watching you drawing a little closer every day is exciting. After you pass this point, you will really be on the home stretch, so I hope the weather stays good for you…and perhaps a little cooler!

As you approach the Victor Harbor area, in Backstairs Passage, which is the section of water between Kangaroo Island and Cape Jervis, there are some currents you should know about. I will make sure I have my facts straight about them and email the information to you. If you know when to expect the currents, you may be able to use them to help you through that section.

After you pass around Cape Jervis there are limited opportunities for landing and camping, as there are cliffs most of the way until Victor Harbor, but there are some beaches. Tunkalilla Beach would be a good place to camp, but I’m not sure whether it’s allowed…I’ll check that out too, but don’t worry about it. You’d be gone again before ‘they’ realised you were there. There are some splendid tiny beaches in little coves, but I don’t know which ones are good for camping (or landing). Depending on the weather, the tide can come up very high in some of those, although they are lovely isolated places to be.

I have just returned from a trip away, but now have a few weeks to myself, so I’ll check all these things out and let you know. After you pass the Victor Harbor area, you have the very long beach of the Coorong, splendid camping, but the waves can be exciting if there’s a big swell coming in. Hopefully things will be fairly calm for you by then. You’ve earned some easy paddling.
